Gezer was one of the largest of the ancient cities in Israel, today it shows as a long low hump at the edge of the coastal plain, just off the main motorway between Tel Aviv and Jerusalem. Situated in the middle of farm land it is reached by dirt tracks.
However, the views from its crest, from which both the coastal plain from Ashkelon to beyond Tel Aviv (photos 1167f.) and the hills of the Shephelah (see the next 4 photos) can be seen demonstrate one reason for its strategic importance.
